Who Is The Best Kanto Starter?
Who is the best starter to choose from Gen 1? We have provided you with details about each of them and why you might decide to pick them.
Bulbasaur
Bulbasaur is a grass and poison type that is one of the original starters. It evolves into Ivysaur at level 16 and then into Venusaur at level 32. Both of them share the same typing as Bulbasaur.
In the original games, Bulbasaur was the starter that you would choose to give you the best shot at beating the early gym leaders. That is because grass is super effective against the first three gyms, Brock (rock type), Misty (water type), and Surge (electric type). It also has the best based stats out of any of the other three starters.
Later on in the game, it provides the least amount of upside as Venasaur has the lowest based stats out of Charizard and Blastoise.
Squirtle
Squirtle is a pure water type that is one of the original starters. It evolves into Wartortle at level 16 and then into Blastoise at level 36. Both of them share the same typing as Squirtle.
In the original games, Squirtle was the starter that would give you an average difficulty to beat the early gym leaders. It wasn’t easy to beat the first few gyms but it also wasn’t too difficult either. It is also second in terms of based stats out of all the starters.
Squirtle provides the average upside later on in the game as Blastoise is second in terms of the best based stats out of Charizard and Venasaur.
Charmander
Charmander is a pure fire type that is one of the original starters. It evolves into Charmeleon at level 16 and then into Charizard at level 36. Charmeleon shares the same typing as Charmander but Charizard becomes a fire and flying combination when it evolves.
In the original games, Charmander was the starter that would provide the biggest challenge in beating the first few gym leaders. That is because fire is weak to the first two gyms (Brock and Misty). It also has the worst based stats out of any of the starters.
It provides the most upside though later on as Charizard has the best based stats out of Blastoise and Venasaur.
So, Which Original Starter Pokemon Should You Choose?
The case for Bulbasaur is for anyone who doesn’t care about their starter. If you have other favorites that you can catch early on in the game, pick Bulbasaur and it can help you easily defeat the early gyms. That way, you can focus on your others.
The case for Charmander is for anyone who wants to make the earlier game more challenging. It also is for someone who wants to make the later game easier, as Charizard is very powerful.
The case for Squirtle is if you don’t care about making anything easier or more difficult.
Overall, you should always choose your favorite, regardless of circumstance.
We hope that we were able to help you answer the question of which original starter Pokemon should you choose. Personally, I always go with Charmander as I love Charizard the most out of all the third evolutions. I also like to give myself a bit of a challenge during the early gyms. You can’t go wrong with any of these three starters though as they are all powerful and well-designed Pokemon.
