Some Gen 1 Pokemon Facts
The Creation Of Pokemon
Pokemon was created by Satoshi Tajiri and Ken Sugimori. Tajiri revealed that one of the ideas that inspired Pokemon was his love of collecting insects as a kid.
Tajiri has said that after Nintendo released the Game Boy, the idea to create Pokemon was something that just clicked into his mind. This is because he was intrigued by the link cable and the idea of different systems communicating with one another.
Tajiri says that Nintendo didn’t expect Pokemon to be a big hit when it first came out. They were wrong (to say the least).
Ken Sugimori is said to be responsible for creating the artwork for the original 151 Pokemon.
Shigeru Miyamoto played a big role in the creation of the first games. He is a major name in the video game world, helping to create franchises like Mario and The Legend of Zelda.
Early Names
According to the Red and Green beta, some names of Pokemon were originally planned to be different. Here are some highlights:

Vulpix was originally going to be called Foxfire.
Jigglypuff and Wigglypuff were originally going to be Pudding and Custard
Abra and Kadabra were going to be named Hocus and Pocus. This ended up getting changed.
Growlithe and Arcanine were going to be Flamie and Blaze.
Machop, Machoke and Machamp were originally going to be Kara-tee, Kung-foo, and Ju-doh.

Random Tidbits
Rhydon is rumored to be the very first Pokemon that was ever created. This is supported from early sketches and also Rhydon having 001 as its index number.
Mew was added to the games only two weeks before it was released.
Clefairy is rumored to have been planned as the original mascot for the series. This was later changed to Pikachu. Satoshi Tajiri has said that this change to Pikachu was not his idea.
